The basic AA-6 Acrid missile entered service with the Russian Air Force in 1974.  Designed for high altitude, medium range engagements, the AA-6 has a formidable warhead.  The advanced AA-6, which entered service in 1984, was designed specifically for the MiG-31 Foxhound and has extended range and a much larger warhead.
